"Made By Hand"

6"x6"
Oil on Masonite
$80

To purchase, email me with the title in the subject line.

My dad is a very talented wood turner. You can see some of his work here. I did this piece from a photo of him working on one of his bowls.

"With Age Comes Wisdom"

12"x14"
Oil on Masonite
SOLD

I am really happy with this piece. I have done so many pieces of my grandmother recently, whether just her hands or her whole figure, but they have all been from pictures of her when she was younger. This piece, on the other hand, was from a later picture of her, the way that I remember her. It was so much fun to paint these older hands, as well as the details of her dress and sweater.

This is another close crop of one of my family photographs. I painted the "zoomed out" version of this photo several months ago. See it here.

"Resting in Her Lap"

12"x14"
Oil on Masonite
$150

To purchase, email me with the title in the subject line.

For this piece, I decided to combine the hand studies I have been doing with the family portraits I did in my last series. This is a very tight crop of a picture of my grandmother sitting on a hill. I tried to replicate the scratched and faded look of the photograph in the background. I may be exploring this idea further.

New Website!

I am very excited to announce the launch of my new website, www.EmilyClarkeStudio.com! On the site, you can see collections of my larger work, get updates on upcoming shows, and get more information about myself and my work. You can even get directions to the studio. And, don't worry, I will still be posting (almost) daily paintings here on my blog, which can also be easily accessed through the new site. Thanks everyone for your continued support!

"With Open Hands"

12"x14"
Graphite on Masonite

I am not sure this one is finished yet. I like the drawing, but would like to add some color to it as well.

"Standing in My Own Shoes"

6"x6"
Oil on Masonite
SOLD

A while back, I did a painting of my sister's tennis shoes. This time, I decided to paint my own. There seemed to be something patriotic about painting a pair of blue Converse shoes. Happy 4th of July!

"Palms Up"

6"x6"
Oil on Masonite
$80

To purchase, email me with the title in the subject line.

It was interesting on this piece to focus on the flat area of the palm, and the small details, rather than focusing on odd angles or intertwining fingers.

"A Tangle of Fingers"

6"x6"
Oil on Masonite
$80

To purchase, email me with the title in the subject line.

This piece was fairly complicated. Trying to make the fingers look like they were coming off of the correct hand was more difficult than you might think!

"Clinging to What is Here"

18"x24"
Oil and Graphite on Wood
SOLD

I am really happy with how this piece turned out. It was a bit of an experiment. I got these panels, and couldn't bear to gesso over them, so I did the drawing and then went over that with a clear varnish. Then I just painted right over the top of it. I loved that I was able to use white to highlight the arms, and it stands out so well over the golden tone of the wood.

As promised, here are a few of the larger pieces from my show earlier this month. All of these were done from old family photographs. I do accept comissions, so if you would like me to do a piece from one of your family photos, just email me.

Below are a few pictures from the gallery before the crowds came. That wall was perfect for the large pieces. Over the next few weeks, I will post some of these larger paintings.

I painted this piece before my show last week, but I titled it afterwords, so it really reflects my mood now. A huge thanks to everyone who came out to the show opening on Thursday, and the rest of the weekend! I will post a few pictures in the next few days.

To purchase, email me with the title in the subject line.

While the past few pieces have been of my hands, this one is of my younger sister's hands. And, they are over one of the quilts she made. She is a very talented quiltmaker, and will have her own site up and running soon. I will make an announcement when it launches. In the meantime, just contact me if you want more information about her quilts.

If you were ever to watch me paint, this is the posture that you would see most often- complete with baggy, paint covered jeans and bare feet. I was going to include the easel in this piece, but as I completed the figure, it was almost as if I had stepped into the world of the canvas, rather than being outside of it. For me, it is not so much the fear of putting the first marks on a blank canvas (the beauty of paint being that you can alway paint over it), but just having this whole world of your own to create, and needing to decide what should go in it.

Oil on Masonite
$150

I keep all my brushes, towels, and other painting supplies on the window ledge next to my easel. The early evening light hitting those objects, as well as the tree right outside the studio window inspired this piece.

"Folded in Prayer"

6"x6"
Oil on Masonite
$80

To purchase, email me with the title in the subject line.

This piece is a continuation of last night's theme. I like these masses of various color that seem to give so much volume to the hands. I also had fun painting the ring my sister bought for me in Peru.

"Grasping Hands"

14"x 18"
Oil on Masonite
$200

To purchase, email me with the title in the subject line.

When I was in college, I loved drawing hands. To me, there is something facinating about the range of expression possible in a pair of hands. While my style now is much different than it was in college, I am always able to see the influence of those earlier works on my current pieces.
