A Facinating First Impression

4"x 4"
Oil on paper covered wood panel
The sides are 1" thick and painted light blue
$40

To purchase, email me with the title in the subject line.

What is it about a mirror that is so fascinating to a baby? Or perhaps it is just us who are fascinated by the baby's reaction. We wonder what it is like to get that first glimpse of ourselves, trying to work out exactly what it is we are seeing.

I imagine that my Grandfather took this picture of my Grandmother giving my aunt a look at herself in the mirror. Covering the panel with paper allowed me to paint in both the light and the dark areas to capture the high contrast of the image.

Redeemed

Much of the past few days has been spent getting ready for Artisphere, happening this coming Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in downtown Greenville. While we are not officially a part of Artisphere, all the artists of Art Crossing will be open all weekend, doing demonstrations and selling artwork. So, once you've browsed all the artists' tents up on Main St., come down the stairs and see us.

I did manage to squeeze in this little piece over the weekend. She makes me think of the old movie leading ladies, who, while beautiful and charming, have some dark and mysterious past that they are trying to escape.

This and my other painting-minis will be available for sale this weekend. 4"x 4" painting-minis are only $40, and 6"x 6" painting-minis, like this one, are only $55. All these pieces are painted on wood panel, and the sides are 1" thick and painted a complementary color. Come check them out, plus all the other great pieces I have in the studio.

Her Downward Gaze

In the picture I based this one on, she is looking down at the most wide-eyed baby I have ever seen. It is a very sweet moment, but for me the beauty of this piece is the look on her face. And her flawless finger waves are pretty cool too. This piece is 4"x 4", oil on wood panel. The sides are 1" thick and painted blue. Soon to be available here.

A Bit of Poise

The time period on this one is a little further back than I usually go, but it is such a beautiful portrait that I had to paint it. It is another one of my relatives, a great-grandmother I think. I am fascinated by her elaborate hairstyle and huge bow. I wonder what her day to day life was like. This is another one of my new "painting-minis," which will be listed in my Etsy store as soon as I can get some better pictures. It is 4"x 4", oil on wood panel. The sides are 1" thick and painted red.
