I mentioned on Tuesday that I would be painting live at the VIP night for Fashion on the Town at The Lazy Goat here in Greenville. Fashion on the Town continues today and tomorrow, and the VIP event was a pretty big affair. Above is the piece I painted during the event. I am pretty happy with the outcome. It captured the energy of the night, and is very much an Emily piece.

Bonnie's Big Night Out

Bonnie just had an hour before Robert was coming to pick her up for the party. She had to pick out just  the right outfit, because Margaret had spent the week bragging about her new dress AND her new boyfriend. Just wait until Margaret got a look at Bonnie in this purple number as Robert swung her around the dance floor. This would be a night to remember.

Paper Dolls can be Saucy, Too

I have been trying to play around with my paper doll poses, making some of them a little more unusual. This drawing is a sketch for a new painting that I started on yesterday. She has a bit of that pin-up girl saucy-ness, and it should be a challenge to paint the back views of her clothes.

Gee, Honey, isn't Greenville Swell!

What would it have looked like?

If you live in Greenville, you know that the Falls Park suspension bridge was not around during the 1950's. In fact, it was built only a few years ago. But through the magic of painting I can show you what it could have looked like. This piece is not quite finished. A few more details, and I am thinking about adding the phrase "Greetings from Greenville" in the bottom left corner.

I am doing this piece for the Open Studios exhibit coming up in a few months. All the artists involved in Open Studios submit a 12"x 12" piece. It is always a very cool show.

More Summer Vacation

Every time I say that I am not sure if I am finished with a piece, I end up staring at it for several days (or weeks) and leaving it just as it is. So, that may be the fate of this piece, because I am not sure if it is finished or not. This is one of those pieces that looks one way when you are far away, and totally different up close. There is something I really like about the loose, sketchy quality of it, though. What do you think?

I have several projects that I am in the middle of working on, but something about today called for something new. Maybe it was the beautiful blue sky, or the sunshine, or the fact that it is Friday, but I needed to start something fresh-and to finish it. To do something fun, just for me, that had no expectations attached to it. I love this photo of my grandmother and my aunt. It is so casual and spur-of-the-moment, and I think that just ads to how lovely it is. I was concerned when I first started that I had chosen the most obnoxious shade of yellow imaginable for the background, but now that it is done I like the lightness and energy it gives the piece.

I found the photo that I based this painting on on Square America while looking for images of vintage cars. I don't know who these people are, or what they were doing, but the image makes me think about a first date (I mean, look at how far apart they are sitting!). I can just imagine him coming to pick her up in his parent's car, wearing his best sweater and button-down, and that she spent all day getting her hair into that perfect wave. Yes, this is the kind of thing I think about while I am painting.

Days Like This

I like days like today that are a little different from the norm, but where I am still able to get a lot of work done. I started the morning off bright and early hanging a few paintings at Adam's Bistro, located on Pelham Rd. here in Greenville. If you have never been to Adam's Bistro, you need to go because not only do they hang work by local artists, they have some of the best food and friendliest service in this city. Several pieces from my Oil and Rouge series and my Modern Conveniences series will be on display through May, so be sure to stop by.

I have spent the rest of the afternoon emailing, researching, and doing all the business stuff that often gets put on the back burner, but is so important to being a successful artist. So, I thought today I would post another older piece in the spirit of Valentine's Day.

This painting, currently one of the ones on display at Adam's Bistro, probably gets more comments than all of my other paintings. People want to know why she has been painted in, while he remains a mere outline in the background. I have had people ask if it is a feminist statement, if he is a figment of her imagination, or if he is the spirit of her departed husband. Do you have an interpretation? Want to know what I think? You'll just have to come by the studio and ask me...

Mad Men, anyone?

OK, I admit it...I have never seen Mad Men, although people keep telling me I should check it out. I have seen a lot of photos of the fashion, and it is absolutely right up my alley. But, I just thought this piece had that whole Mad Men vibe, with the sexy gal lounging across a chair and the mysterious guy suavely leaning in the background. If you haven't guessed, this is another piece for my vintage show, Oil and Rouge: A Vintage Affair, coming up on October 23.

I keep mentioning my vintage photo shoot, which is happening this Saturday. I have been busy gathering up props, finalizing clothing, hair, talking with models, and even interviewing with G Magazine. A friend lent me this 50's rotary phone, and I couldn't resist painting it. It is just like one that was at my grandparents' house when I was little. I love the sound of the dial going around. If these phones would still work, I would so have one at my house!
