This is another piece from my sewing series, which will be on display at the Art & Light gallery this Friday night and Saturday afternoon. I like how focused this woman is on her task, and the sepia tones seem to give it such a warm, comfortable look.

I painted this piece a couple of weeks ago, but only recently realized that I never posted it. Although I am right handed, when I paint I always hold a rag and one or two brushes in my left hand. Often, I also hold the piece I am working on! This just goes to show that you do not have to look very far outside yourself to find interesting things to paint.

I was on a photo shoot for work at the begining of last week, and one of our locations was this old run-down chapel out in the middle of nowhere. It was such an amazing location, and I spent much of the time snapping pictures on my cell phone to paint later. On this one I attempted to capture the diffused light coming through the old broken window panes. I will explore this further in some later paintings.

"Straight Stitch"
6"x6"
Oil on Mat board
SOLD
I discovered a site recently that had pictures of various old sewing machines. I thought the detail on this one was gorgeous. This piece was actually fairly difficult to paint. The trouble was trying to clearly show the raised patterns in the silver, while still maintaining the strong reflections and shadows. After much trial and error, I think the final product turned out well.
I will be in Florida the rest of this week, but will have many new pieces to post next week!

I was searching for images for another project recently, and came across an old photograph of this woman. I loved the confident and direct way she is looking at the viewer, as well as the fact that her coat is so large that it covered her hands. This was so much fun to paint, and I was really able to achieve a lot of depth and dimension in the figure.

This is actually my sewing machine. It is an old Singer machine that was my mom's. I wanted to push the colors a little in this one. It is easy to simply try to reproduce the exact color of an object. But, when you really look at something, there are so many more colors present- highlights are full of blues, pinks and yellows; Shadows contain greens and reds. We only need to look a little harder.

I apologize for the lack of posts last week. Most of the week was spent framing and hanging pieces for the UVA show opening on Friday. A huge thanks to all of you who came out to the opening. It was a huge success. I did manage to do this piece in the midst of all the chaos last week. This is another one from my friend's trip to Italy.
