Oil on Mat board

Yesterday was baby sister's birthday, so I decided to do this piece in honor of her. This is from a picture I took several years ago. Happy 24th little sis!

"Dress Up"

6" x 6"
Oil on Mat board
$80

To purchase, email me with the title in the subject line.

This is a necklace that my sister gave me several years ago. I was unsure how I was going to approach painting all the beads and links in the chain, but I think the loose highlights produce the effect that I was looking for.

"Hole in the Sky"

6" x 6"
Oil on Mat board
SOLD

I have started taking my camera with me everywhere, because whenever I do not have it I come across something I want to paint. On this particular day, I walked out of my apartment, but had to run back in to grab the camera and photograph these amazing clouds. This one is very loose, but I think it caught the feeling of the sky that day. I especially like this one from a distance, so if you can, get up from the computer and walk a distance away to look at it.

"Into the Hills"

6" x 6"
Oil on Mat board
SOLD

A huge thanks to my friend Virginia for sending me some of her pics from Italy. This one is from a piece of one of those photos. I like the feeling of being inside a cool, dark, cozy room, but looking out onto and amazingly breath-taking scene. On the landscape portion of this piece, I really kept myself from getting too caught up in the details of the scene, and really tried to just capture the colors and the feeling of the beautiful, wide-open space.

"Into the Dark"

6" x 6"
Oil on Mat board
SOLD

To purchase, email me with the title in the subject line.

This is the last of the pear paintings- at least for this week. I loved the idea of having the reflections in the glass being part of the focus.

"On the Ledge"

6" x 6"
Oil on Mat board
SOLD

I got the idea for this piece late Saturday night. While I have been trying to focus more on it recently, I realize how often the background of my pieces tends to be somewhat of an afterthought. On this one, I wanted the pears to still be the central focus, but I wanted their environment to play an important part. This is the window ledge behind where I usually set up my still lifes.

"Solitary"

6" x 6"
Oil on Mat board
$80

To purchase, email me with the title in the subject line.

This is obviously a continuation of last night's subject matter. I really focused on the surface texture of the pear as well as the color. I also wanted to pick up some of the colors of the pear in the background.

"Too Colorful to Eat"

6" x 6"
Oil on Foam board
SOLD

I bought these pears over the weekend, but instead of eating them, I spent the whole weekend painting them. I love the colors- the bright green on one side, and the rosy glow on the other. I am constantly amazed at the beauty of creation.

"Delicious"

6" x 6"
Oil on Foam board
SOLD

It really fascinates me how little strokes and dashes of color, when looked at from a distance, become a solid and recognizable object. I love the looseness of the strokes in this one. It seems to have a lot of color variation in it, even though I only used three. I also like the high contrast between the dark shadows and the bright highlights on the top of the apples.

"Woman in Purple"

6" x 6"
Oil on Mat board
$80

To purchase, email me with the title in the subject line.

Typically when I am starting a painting, I do an under painting in yellow or grey, or a lighter version of the color of the object I am painting. However, on this one I did the entire under painting in purple, which gave the whole piece a rosy glow and left a purple outline around the figure. It really gives this piece a different feeling than some of my other pieces- a little less polished yet with more impact.

"Key to Success"

3 1/2" x 5 1/2"
Oil on Mat board
$65

To purchase, email me with the title in the subject line.

This is not the piece I intended to paint last night. I started on another piece, and then went out for a couple of hours. When I came back home and resumed painting, I realized how ambitious a subject I had picked, and I suddenly was completely uninspired. But, the last thing I want to do is to not paint simply because I "don't feel like it." So around 10:00 last night I created this little piece. I wouldn't consider it the best piece I've ever done, but at least I kept going despite the obstacles- what I would consider a major "key to success."

I don't have words for this one. Letting the image speak for itself.

Art & Light opening

Below are a couple of pictures from the Art & Light Gallery opening. It is such a great venue, and the whole night was a success. We had a great turnout, and had a lot of fun with our local musical guests, Jazz Mountain. Thanks to everyone who came out. After a very busy week, I have gotten back on my daily painting schedule, and will be working hard preparing for two more shows in October!

"Time Passing"- In progress

This is the sundial in my parents' garden. I hated that I couldn't finish this one last night, but I spent so much time on the detail of the sundial, that it was very late and I didn't want to rush through the background. I will post the completed piece tomorrow.

Tuesday, September 4, 2007

Hello all. I was out of town for most of the weekend, and have been busy getting things ready for the gallery opening on Friday, so I haven't done much painting. Don't worry, I will be posting again very soon. Just a reminder that the Art & Light show opens this Friday and Saturday. There is a great story in the Greenville News about Ryan Calloway, one of the artists in the show. Check it out. Hope to see you all this weekend.
